Names of God..El Elyon

The names of God:

El Elyon..God of the heavens and earth.

A little boy looked up into his mother’s eyes and said,”Mom,how did God make himself?”The little fellow realized that for everything there must be a beginning. How did this God come to be?

What about this vast universe we live in?We live in a galaxy of over 200 million suns seperated by 200 million miles from one end to the other..this galaxy in which we live. And there are many other galaxies. How did it all begin? We know that from nothing, nothing can come. Therefore something had to exist from all eternity..

El Elyon means the possessor of the heavens and earth. In a real statement of faith, the writer to the Hebrews said in Heb.11:3.”Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”What is seen by us was not made out of that which was visible.By faith we understand that God made a command and everything we know in the universe now, came into being by the command of the word of God.

In Gen.1:1,we read,”In the beginning,God(Elohim, the covenant keeping God)created the heaven and earth.”And when he created the world in which we live,He did not withdraw himself, but he entered into a covenant with the world and all that was in it in the universe.

In the beginning God.And that beginning may have been millions of years ago,but it had a beginning.

El Elyon, the possessor the creator of the heavens and earth is the one who brought it all into being.

What a sad state of affairs we have in our nation today, when a little child or a student looks up into the face of its teacher and says,”teacher tell me how it all started, and the teacher may believe in his heart that it all started with El Elyon, the possessor, the creator of the heaven and earth, but he can’t say it.”And he has to say,”Well, what does the text book say.?”And we read this…that the universe in which we live began with a great BANG!It was all an accident. An accident, collision of atoms. And we are part of the particles and there is no God.There is no Creator.

It is a mere ACCIDENT!David looked up into the heavens and declared,”When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him?and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”(Psa.8:3,4).Again,David said,”The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth his handiwork.”David said in Psa.14:1”The fool hath said in his heart,There is no God.”

The name before us,El Elyon, affirms a great truth that our God is the Ruler, the Creator, and the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth.

If He is not, then we are afloat on a small little world, hurling about in a vast uncaring universe. And you and I have absolutely no significance …but we will live,we will exist, and then one day we will die,and then the human race will go on.

But if He is El Elyon. If He is the Master, and the Creator, and the Possessor,of the Universe. If it is true that All things were made by Him.If that is true, then it has some deep implications for you and me.

1.God as El Elyon has authority over our individual lives.

The first time we ever read of El Elyon is in the book of Genesis.

Lot is living in the wicked city of Sodom.Four kings have invaded Sodom and they have taken captive many of the inhabitants and much of the belongings of that particular city.

There has been a great defeat of the king of Sodom and his kingdom.

When Abraham heard that his nephew Lot had been taken by these four kings,He and his small army went into battle and defeated these four kings, and now he comes back victoriously and there in the valley of the king..Kidron,he meets two men.

He is coming back in victory. The first of these two men that he meets(Gen.14:17-18) is the king of Sodom. The second man is a strange man,Melchizedek. He is a Priest, king of Salem, which was later to become the city of Jerusalem.Ge,.14:18,And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine:and he was the priest of…the most high God(El Elyon.v.19,And he blessed him,and said,Blessed be Abram of the …most high God,possessor of heaven and earth(El Elyon).

Notice several things that happen here concerning Melchizedek, the Priest.

His ministry to Abraham was to remind him that he was a servant of the most High God.That he was a servant of El Elyon. He is saying to Abraham,”Abraham, the God that you serve is the possessor. He is the creator of the heavens and the earth. He made it all.He owns it all and he controls it all. And then the Priest gave him bread and wine.

And then we notice that after being reminded that he is a servant of El Elyon, the God of creation….in that very moment,Abraham begins to worship El Elyon. The Bible says after he received the blessing…he gave him tithes of all.Gen.14:20b.

As the servant of El Elyon, the maker of it all,the one who owns it all,Abraham begins to worship God.And how does he worship God?He worships him by giving a tithe to the Lord.By taking that which was his and giving it back to God.

”He owns it all”,Abraham was saying. And I am his steward. The tithe that we give to the Lord is not a debt that we pay to God….but the tithes and offerings that we bring to the Lord…they are an act of worship to El Elyon, the one who owns it all,

The one who gives it all.

The one who gives his life.

The one who gives us breath.

The one who allows our hearts to beat.

The one who gives us strength to earn our daily bread.

It is an act of worship to him who is El Elyon, the creator, the one who owns it all.

But standing there in the valleywas another man.v.21.The king of Sodom. He begins to speak,And the king of Sodom said unto Abraham,Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. And then Notice the deep convictions that were in the heart of this man,Abraham.v.22,23.I have sworn to the Lord,El Elyon unto the most high God,the possessor of heaven and earth that I take not from a thread even to the shoelatcher, and that I will not take anything that is thine, lest any should say,I have made Abraham rich.

Abraham was saying,

I don’t want your filthy lucre,

I don’t want anything from Sodom.

I,ll not be in debt to you and your sinful city…Lest thou should say,I have made Abraham rich.v.23b.

So,first of all…El Elyon is the God of the individual,….but,

Secondly,El Elyon has power over the unseen powers of darkness, over Satan.

In Genesis.1:1,In the beginning God created the heaven and earth. And he is still the possessor of heaven and earth, and in him we live,we move, and have our being.

But you turn over to the third chapter of Genesis and everything that God has made is beautiful, but suddenly Satan comes upon the scene. In Gen.3:1 he challenges these people to disobey El Elyon, the God who made the heavens and the earth.

Where does Satan come from? How did he come into this world in which you and I live?Who created Satan? How did he come into being?

Ezekiel.28:14-17 enlightens us concerning Satan.Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth;and I have set thee so:thou wast uaven and earth.pon the holy mountain of God;thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. But the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned:therefore,I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God:and I will destroy thee,O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness:I will cast thee to the ground,I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

Isaiah.14:12-14.How art thou fallen from heaven,O Lucifer, son of the morning!how art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!Fot thou hast said in thine heart,I will ascend into heaven,I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation,in the sides of the north:I will ascend above the heights of the clouds:I will be like the most High,(El Elyon),the possessor of the heaven and earth.

Nevertheless,in his attempt to usurp and take the place of God as the Ruler of the heavens and the earth…God said,”I will thurst you down into hell.v.15.Lucifer wanted to take the place of El Elyon, but El Elyon has authority over the powers of darkness and of hell.

Thirdly,as El Elyon he has authority as possessor of heaven and earth over the nations of the world.

In the book of Daniel,Nebuchadnezer was a great historical figure. He was probably the most powerful man in his day.He had a dream and asked Daniel,God’s prophet, to interpret the dream for him.

And now he comes into the presence of the king to interprett he dream that he has dreamed that he has had.

Daniel.4:13-18.v.17b…that the living may know that the…most High(El Elyon) ruleth in the kingdom of men,and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

And judgment came upon that king and on that nation. But as a result of this humbling of Nebuchadnezer,we read in Daniel.4:34.And at the end of the days,I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me,and I blessed the most high(El Elyon),and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation.

  1. El Elyon only appears once in Genesis. It was also the name used by the Canaanites and pagas for god most high.

Since most commentaries comment that Genesis 14:21 is probably a reference to pagan tradition for the 90% then it is logical that the 10% was also a pagan requirement for spoils of war.

Therefore Abram probably was required to pay his tithes from spoils of war.

  2. Russell,
Tithing is the law.Under grace we can give 11%.

  3. Agreed. Or zero % if they must buy medicine, food and sheltder first. Dod ydou agree with that?

  4. Russell,
That is between them and the Lord.We are to give as the Lord has prospered us of our own free will. What someone gives or doesn’t give is none of my concern.I rejoice that our small church has been able to help the less fortunate with medicine, food and shelter.

    Russell,

The first NT believers in ACTS gave ALL THEY HAD!

The Lord is worthy of all that we give Him! (Matthew 6:33)

  6. I commend them for giving all that they had. The question is “why”? God did not tell them to do so. They probably expected Jesus to return at any moment.

What was the result? When the goods ran out they had no property and Paul had to collect food for them for a generation until they were able to re-establish themselves.

How do you explain Acts 21:20? And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law.

It is clear to me that the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem were STILL TITHING to the Temple over 30 years after Calvary.

Christians are commanded to give freely, sacrificially, generously, regularly, joyfully and with the motivation of love for God and man. The following New Covenant free-will principles are found in Second Corinthians, chapters 8 and 9: (1) Giving is a “grace.” These chapters use the Greek word for “grace” eight times in reference to helping poor saints. (2) Give yourself to God first (8:5). (3) Give yourself to knowing God’s will (8:5). (4) Give in response to Christ’s gift (8:9; 9:15). (5) Give out of a sincere desire (8:8, 10, 12; 9:7). (6) Do not give because of any commandment (8:8, 10; 9:7). (7) Give beyond your ability (8:3, 11-12). (8) Give to produce equality. This means that those who have more should give more in order to make up for the inability of those who cannot afford to give as much (8:12-14). (9) Give joyfully (8:2). (10) Give because you are growing spiritually (8:3-4, 7). (11) Give because you want to continue growing spiritually (9:8, 10-11). (12) Give because you are hearing the gospel preached (9:13).

  7. chadwick Says:

    Russell,

Do you give freely to the LORD? Or do you retain freely all of your money?

  8. chadwick Says:

    Russell,

Giving is also an act of worship. Do you choose not to worship the Lord through giving?

  9. I give sacrificially more than 10% but I do not call such tithign because it is not food from inside Israel. I preach, teach adn sing for free.

2 Cor 8:12-15 is my guide.

    Why do you ask?

  10. chadwick Says:

    Russell,

I have not even mentioned the word TITHING. 😀

    chadwick

  11. Chadwick

Why are you asking me personal questions?

  12. chadwick Says:

    Russell,

It is a rhetorical question. You said:
“Christians are commanded to give freely, sacrificially, generously, regularly, joyfully and with the motivation of love for God and man.”

I was just making sure that you practice what you preach! 😉

  13. I am visually disabled and had to retire early. I live in a 960 sq ft mobile home. My total family income is less than $50K. After paying my bills I usually spend more than I receive. Yet I still give a huge percentage of my income to the church I attend which is more than 10% of my soon-to-be-depleted 401K and other income. Now tell me how many do that.
