The Second President of the SBC,R.B.C.Howell,A Calvinist.

Considering that the founders of the SBC were committed to the Doctrines of grace(Calvinism)why is it that the evangelism department and (Marshall Fagg) are so opposed to the doctrines of grace?

Recently I received an e-mail from a layman. He wrote,”It is very sad that the SBC has gotten so far away fom its roots. The reason why many Christians have no spiritual discernment is because of shallow preaching and the truth(the doctrines of grace)is not taught. The Doctrines of Grace are considered error by most Southern Baptist preachers.Have they never read what the founders of the SBC believed? The Arminian preachers in the SBC say they preach the truth, but are they preaching the truth when they are Calvinist bashers? They don’t know the truth, unless they believe the Doctrines of Grace.

For years I did not know the Doctrines of Grace.Something was missing from what was being preached and taught in SBC churches I attended over the years. It was the Doctrines of Grace!God led me to the Doctrines of Geace 6 1/2 years ago. These doctrines transformed my life.

Not because it challenges evangelism…obviously 10% of the churches having Calvinstic values doesn’t have the effect we have noticed on the Conventions numbers. However, more and more young seminarians and and other young pastors do have very strong view on God’s soverignty and want to base their methods on Biblical views of God and Ministry, not the utilitarian, atheological pablum that passes for church order these days. If the state conventions in particular do not repent of this utilitarian bent, they may find their young leaders going to independents and Acts 29 type groups and sending their cash to New Tribes and other independent missions groups. The SBCV is terrible in their Richmond office on utilitarian values. My hope for SBC churches up here is that some of the younger guys that minister in Tidewater and out West sound very Piperistic when they explain their reason for being.

In the VA illustration. The young men I referred to work for one of the VA Conventions. The Richmond based hierarchy and the Central East area Church Planting and Church Enrichment Consultants (sort of like splitting the DOM job) are very utilitarian…”whatever works to put more backsides in the pew, we will try to get you to do.” These younger guys that do not work out of the Richmond area taught classes at the Leadership Tng in August. Both of them gave a reason for why they do what they do…study what they taught and try to help plant Biblical churches. They both sounded as if they had just read “Let The Nations Be Glad.” They know they are working for God’s glory first, and they work hard to use methods that conform to Biblical guidance and commmands. When I heard their intros to their classes I was unbelievably encouraged. If the younger men who have been educated in the post resurgence seminaries can stay at home, the SBC has a real chance of real Reformation and hopefully God will use that for real Revival in the churches and society.

IT IS THAT THEY ARE VIEWED AS DANGEROUS. YOU ARE REVEALING THE TRUE HISTORICAL IGNORANCE OF THE WHOLE CONTROVERSY. I AM THANKFUL FOR OUR CALVANIST FOREFATHERS WHO ESTABLISHED OUR CONVENTION.

I HAVE BASICLY BEEN RUN OUT OF TOWN ON A POLE FOR MY REFORMED BELIEFS. PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH[SBC] DONT KNOW WHAT THEY BELIEVE. SOME DONT EVEN KNOW THAT REFORMED DOCTRINE IS WHAT ALOT OF THEIR CHURCH, [WHAT WE BELIEVE] CHARTERS DECLARE.,
    BY HIS GRACE ONLY,

I think it is reasonable to say that we will see a decrease in numbers of “conversions” when the true Gospel is preached. When a utilitarian, even “purpose driven” message is prominent, many people will get on the proverbial band wagon. Even the Lord Jesus had a large number of fans (among whom were some followers)…until He talked (as recorded in John 6) about eating His flesh and drinking His blood, and reminded people that the Spirit, not flesh, gives life. Then, John 6:66 (interesting verse number, eh?) says, “After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him” (ESV). This verse even calls those fans “disciples.” What were they disciples of, though? Free food? Interesting teaching? Celebrity? A perception of Christ’s authority that exceeded the Pharisees’ authority? Some sense of … oh … purpose to drive their lives?

Yes, we can expect NUMBERS to drop off, and *gasp* we just CAN’T have THAT happen, can we? What if, after preaching the sovereignty of God, and the need for Christ to have eternal life, not just “your best life now,” and things like Hell… we only have a small percentage of last year’s new member and baptism NUMBERS? Could it POSSIBLY be that there are fewer false professions and a higher percentage of those who trust Christ…actually being redeemed? Or, could it be that if the Gospel were preached, that THOUSANDS might be added to the church in single days? After all, faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God (Rom 10:17) — not Joel Osteen or Rick Warren’s humanistic ideas!

I know this reply is late, but maybe someone will be interested. I am the subject of “grave concern” in a local SBCV fellowship. I teach Sunday School and I agree with the Sovereigny of God in salvation. My class is in agreement, and I am a real “threat” to the current fellowship administration. I have “an agenda that is dangerous to evangelism” according to the interim pastor. Although the fruits of his brief ministry have caused the youth to leave the church, including the youth pastor, along with many working members of the fellowship, the onslaught continues.

The message of “evangelism” is preached without admitting the verse from Matthew 28:18b “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” It is a message that raises personal testimonies to the level of salvative power instead of the testimony of Christians: Jesus Christ was crucified, raised from the dead, and reigns on God’s throne in heaven and in earth.

Being in the middle of a battle for the truth of the Bible, I am very concerned that the recent “conservative resurgence” in the SBC will soon return to man-centered liberalism in this next generation. And these “conservatives” are completely unaware of the cycle and source of such liberalism. And yes, even though they have been made aware of the belief and preaching of the original founders of the SBC, they deny that God is sovereign in salvation. Pelagius and later so-called “Arminians” were declare heretics. Now, Calvin is treated as a heretic. Could Spurgeon been more affirmed in his vision of the future resulting from the Downgrade?

Greg and many others speak of hope with the new generation of seminary graduates. So far, they are having little to no impact in the SBC, at least not in my area of the world.

I actually detect hatred from the present administration in my fellowship. This is very sad.
