Church Covenant:Challenge

Covenant;Last two paragraphs. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love,to remember one another in prayer,to aid one another in sickness and distress,to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and Christian courtesy in speech,to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconcilation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.

We morever engage that when we remove from this place we will as soon as possible unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s word.

This mutual challenge centers around the family of God.The church is called a BODY in 1.Cor.3.The church is called a BEACON  in Matt.5.,where we are reminded that we are the light of the world. The church is referred to as a BROTHERHOOD in Acts.2:41-47.The church is seen as a BRIGADE in Matt.28.We are told that we are to march around the world and preach the gospel. The church is referred to as a BULWARK in Matt.16.The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Everyone of these areas of responsibility brings its own challenge. But no challenge is greater than the challenge contained in the word Brotherhood or in the term Body. That is,there is a challenge to work within the Brotherhood or within the Body.

Within the local church there are internal conflicts between individuals in that Body of believers. And here we are challenged to deal with one another in the proper sense in this mutual challenge in the last two paragraphs in our church covenant.

1.Notice that we are challenged to demonstrate Christian goodness.

You and I ought to consentrate on cultivating Christian goodness. How can I demonstrate Christian goodness?

(1)If we look out for one another.Thats a good way to demonstrate Christian goodness.Just to look out for one another’s welfare. Not like Cain who killed his brother Abel. Not like Joseph’s brothers who sold hom into slavery. Not like Judas. He didn’t look out for anybody except himself.Thats the problem with many folks today..looking out for number one.Heb.13:1.Let brotherly love continue.

(2)We can look up for one another.Look up in prayer and pray for one another.

(3)We can look in on one another.”To aid in distress.”Gal.6:2.

2.We are challenged to develop Christian graces.

(1)We are challenged to develop the Grace of Sympathy.Sympathy means the act or capacity of entering into or sharing the feelings or interests of another.

One tribe of the North American Indians had a phrase for the word sympathy…”Two hearts pulling one load.”We need to say to those in distress, “I care.”Rom.12:15.Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. “Two hearts pulling one load.”

A letter the Saddle Mountain Indians wrote:The Saddle Mountain Indians had a mission and some who were worshipping in that Mission heard that their Indian Agent, their white Indian Agent’s son,had suffered an accident and had his leg amputated..and they wrote a letter to that Agent at the out post.

“Today we have learned that great sorrow has come into your life because your boy whom you love very dearly has had to suffer. We are only poorIndians and cannot help you,but we all feel that we can tell you that we are sorry for you. When a big storm comes, our horses bunch together and stand with their heads down trying to keep each other warm.A great storm of trouble has come to you.Let us put our hearts together and with heads bowed down together we will try to comfort each other.Let us put our hearts beside yours in this time of trouble.” Well said.
