The Baptist Church Covenant:Church Membership.

The word Covenant means an agreement between persons or parties. It is a solemn compact between members of a society such as the church. It is a contract to maintain the faith, the disciplines and doctrines. It is an undertaking of legal validity. This contract that we enter into becomes a binding contact, agreement,or covenant.

Baptists do not have creeds to which they subscribe except the word of God.We have no creed but the Bible.

The church covenant declares what we believe the obligations of the members of the church are.It declares how we are to  “behave”as a church body.It declares that we will do something.

Creed has to do with belief.

Covenant has to do with behaviour.

The church covenant begins by pointing out just who is a member of a local church.

Having been led as we believe by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and the Son,and the Holy Spirit,we do now in the presence of God and this assembly, most solemly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.

1.The Pre-requisites For Church Membership.

This Church Covenant begins by pointing out just who is a member of a local church.

(1)First,a person must be convicted of their sin and of their need of the Savior. “Having been led as webelieve…..to receive the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe in a REGENERATE CHURCH MEMBERSHIP.We believe that only persons who have been born again should come into our fellowship.John..6:63. It is the Spirit that quickeneth;the flesh profiteth nothing:the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

(2) A Person Must be Converted.”To receive the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.”Matt.18:3.And said,Verily I say unto you,Except you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.Se also..John.1:11-13.

(3) A Person Should Confess Jesus Christ.Note covenant..”On the profession of our faith.”We believe persons ought to confess the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.Rom.10:9-10.

(4)A Person who has confessed Christ Should Conform to Water Baptism.Covenant…”Having been baptized…” Baptism is not a take it or leave it proposition. In the book of Acts every conversion was followed by baptism.

2.The Presence Of  Certain  Witnesses(the witnesses to our membership).Covenant..”We do now in the presence of…”

(1)The Presence Of God.Heb.2:11.I will declare thy name unto my brethren,in the midst of the church will I sing praise uto thee.(Rejoicing when we obey Him)Psalm.34:15.The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous.

(2)The Presence Of This Assembly.Heb.2:12,Saying,I will declare Thy name unto the brethren,in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto Thee. Entering into a Church covenant brings the whole church into the picture, because they also are witnesses to our coming to unite with this body of believers.

3.The Promises For Membership That We Make.

Covenant: “We do now in the presence of God and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.”

When you become a member of this church,we most solemnly enter into this agreement. It is a solemn, sacred thing. It is not flippant. We ought to come in that spirit.

Notice another word here….joyfully.Its a joy to enter into agreement with other brothers and sisters in Christ. It is a joy to band together with those who have a common belief and those who have a common purpose, those who have a common hope, duties, and goals. Its a joy.

We can band together,we are family, its a joy.We as a family should rejoice when we see people come into our family from time to time.We ought to get to know them.We covenant with them.We agree with them.We ought to live this Church Covenant.

  1. The holiness movement used to be called a cult by the rest of Christendom, because of their legalism. Believe me there are layers of this still within said movement. This view wilts the importance of the Lord’s imputed righteousness and grace [Romans 4:6 & 8], though we are to be responsible sons and daughters of the living God [Ephesians 2:8-10].

The Spirit of God led me out of that vicious circle in the 60’s. We count them as brethren but they are like the Pharisees that Jesus had to deal with while He was on earth. Religiousness plus human works and self-made convictions that only confuse new Christians and ‘ties holiness people into knots.’
