Puritan Richard Baxter on Humor.

The great Puritan preacher,Richard Baxter, had this to say about “amusing” talk.He sharply critized those who thought that all joking was sin.

“Many that are godly mistake in thinking that all myrth and pleasent discourse is vain.Whereas the Holy Ghost says(note the contrast),A merry heart does good like a medicine but a broken spirit dries the bones.A merry heart makes a cheerful countentance, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.”

Notice the contrast. Many godly people say amusing talk is wrong..but the Holy Spirit says its a good thing.

Baxter goes on from these verses and describes a couple who were very pious and a whole lot of fun.King Abimeleck saw Isaac “sporting”(making out)with Rebekah his wife(laughing, playing,or sporting).
