Temporary Belivers:Rocky Soil

Matt.13:5-6.And some fell upon stony places(little soil),where they had not much earth:and soon they sprung up,because they had no deepness of earth:and when the sun was up,they were scorched;and because they had no root, they withered away.

Matt.13:20-21.But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon(at once)with joy receiveth it;Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while(Luke8:13.which for a while believe)for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word,by and by he stumbles.

This is a picture of a man who hears the message of the Kingdom of God.

There is an immediate and joyful reception of the message.

There is an initial though temporary manifestation of life.

They endure for a time(Matt13:21).For a while they believe.(Luke8:13.)There was that which seemed to be living. There was that which had the promise of fruit. In fact,as the farmer would look he would see it outgrowing the others.Mark4:15 says, “And some fell on the stony ground, where it had not much earth;and immediately it sprang up,because it had no depth of earth.”

This is a picture of one in which ther is the tragic withering of all sighns of life under the sustained influence of three things.

These three influences are temptation, tribulation, and persecution.Matt13:21bWhen tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word,by and by he stumbles;Luke8:13b which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. They endure for a time. For a while they believe. There was that which seemed to be living. There was that which had the promise of fruit. In fact, as the farmer would look he would see it outgrowing the others.Mark4:5 says, “And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth;and immediately it sprang up,because it had no depth of earth.”

This is a picture of one in which there is the tragic withering of all signs of life under the sustained influence of temptation, tribulation, and persecution.Matt13:21;Luke8:13.

What we learn from these facts:

All joyful and enthusiastic response to the word of God is not necessairly a saving response to the word of God.It is not proof of salvation.

This is a picture of those who respond to the gospel while ignorant of the totality of the demands of the gospel. The gospel comes not only with promises and provisions but with demands.

The Bible speaks of obedience to the faith and of a yoke to bear. The yoke always does one thing to the animal or the person who weaes it.It brings him under the constraint of an authority and a task imposed by another.

The Rocky round hearer hears Jesus preaching, “Come unto me and I will give you rest.”This is what he wants but he stops his ears to “take my yoke upon you.”He does not contemplate the issue of the exchange of government. He wants the promises and provisions but not the yoke.It is impossible to embrace the first part of the invitation in Matt11:28 and not the second. The rest and the yoke go together.

Our churches are filled with rocky ground hearers. When our Lord adds to the church His converts will continue steadfastly.Jesus did not encourage the rocky ground, emotional ground hearer to follow him.Instead he told of the demands of  the gospel as well as the promises and provisions.See Luke9:57-62
